Location:
On-site | Western Area Rural District, Sierra Leone
Ideal for skilled travelers, retired tradespeople, or professionals on sabbatical or seasonal break
Time Commitment: August - December 2025
Full-time (flexible schedule options available) | 8 weeks minimum
Opportunity Description:
Looking for a meaningful way to spend your summer or sabbatical? Join us, help build something that matters.
We’re constructing a community center in Sierra Leone that will serve as a hub for vocational training, clean energy, and rural development programs. This is a hands-on opportunity to lead or support on-the-ground construction efforts, working side-by-side with local crews to create lasting impact.
Whether you’re a builder, carpenter, site manager, engineer, or practical problem-solver, we’re looking for people who can bring their skills, heart, and adaptability to a real-world project with tangible results.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Lead, coordinate, or support daily construction activities on-site
- Work with local teams to organize materials, crews, and schedules
- Support layout, foundation, framing, finishing, or utility prep, based on your skills
- Ensure quality, safety, and teamwork throughout the process
- Adjust to on-the-ground realities (weather delays, supply chain gaps, team needs)
- Collaboration over competition: share knowledge and train others when appropriate, this is a team effort
We’re Looking For Volunteers Who:
- Have experience in construction or skilled trades (carpentry, masonry, roofing, plumbing, electrical, etc.)
- Can work respectfully with local crews, adapting to different practices or rhythms
- Are open to learning about Sierra Leonean culture, values, and community priorities
- Bring flexibility, problem-solving, and humility to the build
- Are physically able to work on-site in a rural environment (with breaks and support)
- Are available for 8 consecutive weeks between August and December 2025
What We Provide:
This is a volunteer-based opportunity, but your basic needs will be covered while you're in-country.
- Lodging and Meals: Safe, modest accommodations will be provided near the build site. Meals are prepared locally and reflect the regional diet.
- Local Transportation: Airport pickup, in-country travel to the site, and any project-related transport will be arranged.
- On-the-Ground Support: Our local team will provide cultural orientation, language guidance, and community integration support to ensure a meaningful and respectful experience.
- Health & Safety: We’ll support you in preparing for travel, including vaccination guidance and emergency protocols.
- Tools and Materials: Basic construction tools and supplies will be available, though we welcome volunteers who wish to bring specialty tools or gear.
- Connection and Purpose: You’ll be welcomed as part of a committed, cross-cultural team—working together, learning together, and building something of lasting value.
Why This Matters:
This center is the physical anchor for Green Pathways – Salone, our long-term initiative to expand access to clean energy, regenerative agriculture, and sustainable jobs in rural Sierra Leone. You’ll be laying the foundation for real futures, not just a building.
